Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania—Frank Lloyd Wright’s only synagogue design—will open a preschool this fall. Leaders see the project as a way to bring in young families, revitalize synagogue life, and keep the historic building active for the next generation.

Built in 1959, Beth Sholom is a National Historic Landmark. Wright called it a “luminous Mount Sinai,” designed to capture the spirit of Jewish continuity. Its dramatic glass-and-concrete design remains a striking symbol of modern Jewish architecture. Now, the new preschool adds another layer to that legacy.

The school will combine Jewish learning with play-based education. Parents are expected to find both academic value and a community connection. In addition, leaders hope the program strengthens ties between families and the synagogue’s mission.

By expanding into early childhood education, Beth Sholom is turning heritage into opportunity. The building will not only inspire awe but also nurture growth, learning, and Jewish identity.
