Jewish summer camps offered Israeli teens a break from the pressures at home

This past summer, more than 770 Israeli teens joined Jewish overnight camps across North America through Campers2Gether, a program run by the Jewish Agency for Israel.

The initiative began in 2024 to give young people from the Gaza envelope area a chance to step away from the pressures of war. Teens were placed in 35 camps, including Ramah in California and Camp Pinemere in Pennsylvania. For many, it was their first extended time abroad since October 7, 2023.

At camp, the Israeli teens found calm and connection. Activities ranged from hiking and Shabbat celebrations to cultural exchanges. For some, seeing girls participate fully in prayer or reading from the Torah was a new experience. Others appreciated the no-phones rule, which offered a rare break from constant news updates.

Camp directors built in daily sessions for Hebrew conversations and mental health support. These spaces allowed Israeli teens to share their experiences with American peers. Campers on both sides described the dialogues as eye-opening, moving the conversation from headlines to personal stories.

Organizers had planned Campers2Gether as a one-time program, but the positive impact has made it an annual effort. Leaders say it provides not only respite for Israeli teens but also a bridge between young Jews across continents.
