Bruce Pearl, Auburn University’s winningest basketball coach and a well-known supporter of Israel and Jewish causes, has announced his retirement after 11 seasons leading the Tigers.

The news comes as Pearl, 65, is reportedly weighing a run for the U.S. Senate in Alabama. He would be vying for the seat being vacated by Sen. Tommy Tuberville, another former coach who transitioned into politics. Pearl acknowledged earlier this month that a campaign was “something I had considered”.

Since arriving at Auburn in 2014, Pearl led the team to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Final Fours. Last season, Auburn won 32 games and reached the Final Four as a No. 1 seed, with Pearl earning co–Coach of the Year honors. Beyond college basketball, he also coached the U.S. team to gold at the 2009 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Pearl’s career has also been defined by his Jewish identity. He brought his teams to Israel, co-founded the Jewish Coaches Association, and spoke openly about faith at press conferences, including dedicating time during March Madness to highlight Israeli hostages in Gaza. His son, Steven Pearl, who has been on Auburn’s staff since 2014, will take over as head coach.
