Donald Soffer, developer of Aventura, has passed away

With deep sadness, the South Florida community mourns the passing of Donald “Don” Soffer, the visionary real estate pioneer who turned swampland into what is now the thriving city of Aventura. He passed away peacefully at the age of 92, surrounded by family.

Best known as the founder of Aventura and co-founder of Turnberry Associates, Soffer helped shape South Florida’s skyline. His legacy includes landmark developments such as Aventura Mall, Turnberry Isle Resort, and the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa—transforming the region into a hub of commerce, luxury, and community.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Soffer moved to Miami in the late 1960s and brought bold ideas to life through integrity, persistence, and a strong belief in community-building. Beyond real estate, he was a generous philanthropist, supporting Jewish institutions, healthcare, and education, leaving a meaningful impact well beyond construction.

He is survived by his loving wife, Michele, and six children, including Jackie and Jeffrey Soffer, who carry forward the family’s commitment to growth and giving back.
