Israeli forces intercept Gaza-bound aid boat with activist Greta Thunberg on board

On Monday, Israeli naval forces intercepted the Madleen, a British-flagged yacht carrying humanitarian aid and over 30 international activists, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, French MEP Rima Hassan, Brazilian politician Thiago Ávila, and French doctor Baptiste André. The vessel attempted to reach Gaza in a symbolic effort to deliver aid and raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The ship departed from Sicily and was intercepted in international waters. According to Israeli authorities, the action was carried out under maritime law due to a long-standing naval blockade aimed at preventing arms smuggling into Gaza. The Madleen was safely redirected to Ashdod Port, where passengers were given medical checks and are expected to be returned to their home countries.

Thunberg described the mission as necessary, calling attention to the suffering of civilians in Gaza. On the other hand, Israeli officials criticized the mission, suggesting it aligned with Hamas narratives. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said footage from the October 7 terror attacks would be shown to the passengers to provide context.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organized the mission, said it intended to peacefully challenge the blockade and deliver a symbolic shipment of aid. Meanwhile, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation announced it was reopening three distribution centers to support ongoing relief inside the territory.

The interception reflects the complex and sensitive nature of the conflict, where security, humanitarian needs, and activism often collide. While Israel maintains that its blockade is necessary for safety, others call for broader humanitarian access.
