Jewish camps express grief and condolences after flooding disaster at Camp Mystic in Texas

A sudden and devastating flood in Texas has left beloved Jewish summer camps damaged just as the season was beginning. The destruction at Camp Young Judaea-Texas and other nearby camps has triggered an emotional wave of grief—not only in Texas, but in Jewish communities across the country.

According to JTA, campers, staff, and alumni are heartbroken. These are more than camps—they are homes away from home, sacred spaces where Jewish identity is formed and lifelong friendships are born.

In the wake of this tragedy, Jewish camps nationwide have stepped up in extraordinary ways. From open letters of support to offers to house displaced campers, the outpouring of love is proof of the unity and strength that binds Jewish communities. The Foundation for Jewish Camp has also launched emergency efforts to help the impacted sites recover and rebuild.

No injuries were reported, but the emotional loss runs deep. “Camp is our heartbeat,” one counselor said. “And we’ll make sure it keeps beating.”
