Legendary Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne dead at 76
Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath known as the “Prince of Darkness,” has died at age 76. He passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. His death marks the end of a defining era in heavy metal music.
From Birmingham to Global Fame
Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham in 1948, Ozzy rose to fame in the late 1960s. He helped define heavy metal as the lead singer of Black Sabbath. Songs like “Paranoid” and “Iron Man” became anthems of the genre. His solo hits, including “Crazy Train,” turned him into one of the best-selling rock artists of all time.
Jewish Connection Through Family and Culture
While Ozzy was raised in the Church of England, he developed deep ties to Jewish culture. His wife, Sharon Osbourne, is the daughter of Jewish music promoter Don Arden. Sharon has often shared, “We were brought up in basically a Jewish household… Judaism is the only religion I have.”
The couple even had a Jewish vow renewal ceremony in 2002 on their family TV show, honoring the cultural traditions they embraced at home.
Support for the Jewish Community
Ozzy was vocal in his support for Jewish causes. He visited Yad Vashem and the Western Wall in Israel. He continued performing in Israel despite international pressure and boycott calls. Jewish groups praised him for standing firmly against antisemitism and supporting the Jewish state.
A Farewell to Fans
Despite battling Parkinson’s disease, Ozzy gave one final performance with the original Black Sabbath lineup in early July. The farewell concert, titled Back to the Beginning, was a gift to lifelong fans.
A Lasting Legacy
Ozzy leaves behind his wife, Sharon, and six children—Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and others—who carry forward his legacy of music, love, and openness to all cultures.
