A tragic boating accident in Biscayne Bay on July 28 claimed the life of 10‑year‑old Arielle Mazi Buchman, the third young victim in a collision between a sailboat and a large construction barge. Arielle had been in critical condition after the crash and died at Jackson Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family. initial victims were identified as 7‑year‑old Mila Yankelevich and 13‑year‑old Erin Ko Han, who were pronounced dead shortly after being hospitalized. A fourth child survived and has since been released from the hospital, while a 12‑year‑old girl and the 19‑year‑old counselor aboard required evaluation but were not hospitalized.

The children were participants in a youth sailing camp hosted by the Miami Yacht Club and Miami Youth Sailing Foundation. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the collision occurred in Hibiscus Island waters around 11:15 a.m., dragging the small sailboat beneath the barge. All aboard were wearing life vests.

Coast Guard officials confirmed toxicology results were negative for the barge crew and operator. Salvation teams and officials say a thorough investigation is underway. Capt. Frank Florio of Coast Guard Sector Miami expressed deep condolences and reaffirmed commitment to uncovering all facts.

Family members and community leaders described Arielle as a bright and caring child. Rabbi Eliot Pearlson, who led her funeral service, called her “remarkable,” sharing stories of a girl always cheerful, empathetic, and beloved by teachers and friends. Her passing came on Tisha B’Av, adding poignancy to an already solemn occasion.
